Each day we select a dozen photos submitted by you to highlight on National Geographic's website -- several of which are also included in each month's National Geographic magazine -- and here we present a selection of the best from March 2011.

A young tiger cub with her chin on one of her siblings. I was very lucky when she peeked up at me as I went to catch this shot. She went back to sleep right afterward.

Our large carnivore research team is based on the banks of the Luangwa River in Zambia, and elephants frequent our camp daily to feed on the wild mango. I had been observing these elephants for a few days now. On this morning, I hadn't changed the settings on my camera from the night before, when we had been capturing images of lions behind camp, hence most of my initial images were blurry. Unplanned outcomes. Yet, I love how this image captures the movement and the intimacy of mother and child.

On a recent trip to Ocotillo Wells in California, we decided to go out on a night run. One of the first hills that the driver decided to climb had a lot of fine sand and we got stuck. The next half hour consisted of trying to get out and not have the Jeep fall into an embankment right next to us that was a 15-foot drop. In 15-20 mph winds and freezing temps, we eventually prevailed and were on our merry way.

While working as a field researcher for a biodiversity study on pine plantations in North Carolina, I found this Agkistrodon piscivorus in a drainage ditch. It's seen here displaying the classic defensive posture that gives it the common name "cottonmouth."

I dug a small pit, big enough for my camera to fit in, just inches from this ghost crab's hole. With my lens at beach level, I hooked up my shutter cable release and hoped to catch the crab as it emerged from its hole. My lens choice and framing were all very intentional. I wanted to capture a dramatic scene with the small crab appearing much larger in the foreground, hopefully conveying what the world might look like from the level of a tiny ghost crab. Taken on the island of Tortola

Monks releasing a floating lantern during the Loy Krathong Festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand. A "fellow" photographer is trying to hog my shot. Luckily for me he added so much more.

While on general patrol on Highway 527, 45 kilometers south of Armstrong, Ontario, my partner and I came across what we thought was only one lynx. Once we pulled over to the side of the road, three others came out of the bush. I was able to get out and take photos from the road without the family being spooked. I took 62 pictures in total.

My husband and I went on our ten year anniversary to Costa Rica and Panama. We just got back and I decided to share this photo with you. This frog is a beauty! Poison dart red frog was found on Red Frog Beach, Basimentos Island, Panama on Feb 19, 2011. These frogs are endangered.

I was on the grass flats just off shore in Key West, Florida, and I found myself with sharks and rays swimming close to my small boat. They stayed with me for a few minutes and then meandered away.

This mertens’ water monitor hatches from its egg in the World of Reptiles nursery at the Wildlife Conservation Society in the Bronx Zoo. The hatchling measured more nearly 12 inches from nose to tail once it freed itself from the egg, which is approximately the same size as a chicken egg. Mertens’ water monitors are a protected species native to Australia and are threatened by collection for the pet trade.

On the morning of a milestone birthday a young pride of four lion cubs, less than a year old, were waiting for me at the side of the road inside the gates of Buffalo Springs Park in Kenya. They were spread out relaxing under a tree, not far off the road. This particular male kept eye contact with me, never wavering. I am quite sure he was saying, "No way you are that old!"

The path of Sirius star (at left), and the well known constellation Orion, were setting behind The Belem Tower, which has become one of the symbols of the Lisbon city. It is a memorial to the Portuguese power during the Age of the Great Discoveries. In 1983 it was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Was trying to get the right composition of the mother and her pup when the Lava Lizard popped out of nowhere keen as a whistle to be in it too. Only managed one photo before his patience ran out and he disappeared again.

This particular photograph is one in a series of images from my Creative Process project. In this contribution to the collection, I focused on Dwele, capturing the authenticity and sensation of a musician and his instrument. The image represents what classic Detroit Soul Music is made of: live instrumentation, a dedication to the craft, and pure emotion.
