The village of Qasigiannguit lies about 150 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle on Greenland's western coast. On a cold night in mid-March, 2011 solar storms produced some exceptionally luminescent northern lights.

This guy was sitting in a plant in my back garden in Byron Bay, Australia. I just happened to have my camera with me. He seemed to like having his picture taken.

We found this little guy while snorkeling at Cape San Blas in the panhandle of Florida. As the boat captain was holding him to show everyone on the tour, he decided to spit out some water just as I snapped the picture.

One of the permanent residents of Sarvey Wildlife Rescue and Rehab Center. It was eerily beautiful. The photo was taken by my 18-year-old daughter, Lloyd.

This is a shot of a monk walking on train tracks in Ella. Buddism accounts for 70 percent of the Sri Lankan population. We encountered this monk walking back from a hike to the local mountain called Ella Rock. It started to rain on top and it didn't stop pouring the whole way down. We were soaking wet and tired but the breathtaking views as well as running into this brightly clothed monk made for a very memorable day.

A large group of Tibetan monks stopped to relax at the top of a 5000 meter pass, travelling towards Mount Everest base camp. This monk seemed completely at peace, as he floated above the breathtaking view

This picture was taken in Tromso, Norway. When the dogs were told to stop they would all abrupt into howling presumably because they wanted to keep running. There was nothing around and all you could hear was their echoes. This photograph perfectly captures the feeling of that moment.

The barn cat, as its name implies, thrives in rural areas on farms and in barns. These strays keep away from people and will flee if approached and if cornered, they can be extremely ill tempered and may bite, hiss, and spit. This group showed that even though these cats can be indifferent to people, they undeniable loved each other!

This shot is of an iris that grows in my yard. The flower is backlit by the bright white monitor of my iMac. I shoot with a Canon 5D with a Canon 100mm macro lens. This amazing lens really captures all the artistic details of this delicate flower.

Tori horse is a breed developed in Estonia, Tori, starting from 1890 with a stallion named Hetman, crossbreed of a Norfolk Trotter stallion and an Anglo-Norman mare. Tori horses are incredibly strong, both in build and genetics, very friendly and patient. Later the breeding of Tori horse developed a new line of lighter, sporting type of horses. The Tori gelding Helsing on the picture is one of the old-type Toris.

A moth in the morning dew, captured after a night of humidity. The photo portrays one of the smallest and most common butterflies in Italy, but seen from up close, it becomes a true show of color.

The spontaneous highlight of a recent extended session of play between a father and son orangutan shot at Melbourne Zoo. Zoos Victoria have recently shifted to 100 percent conservation focus, and a year ago helped in successful campaigns highlighting the threat to this beautiful species through palm oil production.

Underwater archaeologists explore a cenote deep in the jungle of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. A source of fresh water for the Maya, it was also a sacred place thought to be the entrance to Xibalba—the Mayan underworld.

I never was a big fan of waterfalls. Most of those I had seen failed to impress me. So after a while I learned to ignore majority of them. But I had to make an exception for Iguazu Falls. I didn’t know what to expect, but I kind of thought it couldn’t be anything more than just some water falling down the mountain. I was so wrong! The place happened to be mind-blowing. The amount of waters was beyond my imagination and the ability to almost touch the falls was overwhelming.

An Alaskan bush pilot, Nick Oppegard, flies his Cessna 220 above the lava dome of Mount Redoubt in south-central Alaska. Mount Redoubt, on the Alaskan Range, erupted in March 2009 and interrupted flight traffic for several days in the entire region. Volcanic ash will bring a halt to any internal combustion engine. Alaska’s more-than-40 active volcanoes create an increasing challenge for international airfreight and supplying bush communities via small airplane.

Kodanad in southern India was once the largest elephant training center for captured elephants in India. Capturing elephants in the wild was outlawed in the 1970s and Kodanad is now used primarily for a rescue training center and a place where tourists help bathe the elephants with coconut husks in the Periyar River.

What an amazing connection I had with this Gibbon on the day this shot was taken. He was incredibly curious about my camera and really "vogued" for me. He had such a sweet face, so the juxtaposition of facial expression in this photograph absolutely surprised me. Primates will always be my first photographic love. Their ability and range of expression and emotion make them perfect subjects. I think I tired him out thought, snapping this yawn was a lucky shot. His fingers are amazing too.

I found this fly hanging out on the orange lichen that grows on the lighthouse on the Farallon National Wildlife Refuge in California. The lighthouse was built in 1853 and it's walls are covered with all sorts of wonderful lichen. My silhouette is visible on the shiny back of the fly.

The Nankoweap Graneries, approximately 50 miles downstream of Lees Ferry, along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park. This section of the canyon is called "Marble Canyon" for the towering cliffs of Redwall Limestone that characterize the first section of the Grand Canyon.

A snorkeler gazes at a shallow shipwreck that lies amid the protected waters of Palau's inner lagoon. The ship was a fishing vessel damaged by an intense storm three decades ago. It has surprisingly little marine growth on it, probably due to the fact that it rests in a part of the lagoon that receives no current and therefore few coral larvae.

The Taliban destroyed this 121-ft (37m) statue of Buddha more than 10 years ago. My wife and I saw it after a 143-mile overland journey from Kabul to Bamiyan Valley, Afghanistan, in 1976. This monumental carving along the ancient Silk Road, and an even larger 180-ft (55m) Buddha nearby, were chiseled out of the sandstone cliffs at least 1,400 years ago. To get this photo, I climbed to a perch above the head through a network of former monks’ caves and tunnels that honeycombed the cliffs.
